Machine Polishing FAQs

We’ve answered some of the most popular questions about car machine polishing below. If you have any further questions, please call 07510153254 or email billy@nvs-valeting.co.uk

How does machine polishing work?

Machine polishing works by abrading the paint to remove a thin layer of clear coat in order to eliminate or minimise the appearance of scratches and swirl marks. This results in an ultra-glossy finish which can then be protected using a wax, sealant or ceramic coating.

Why is machine polishing necessary?

Most vehicles unfortunately are littered with clear coat defects (scratches and swirl marks), which are inflicted due to poor wash techniques e.g. using sponges/ brushes or automatic car washes. Even brand-new cars often have paint defects due to poor factory and dealership prep. These defects look unsightly under bright sun, and also cause the finish to look dull and tired. Machine polishing is the only way to permanently remove these scratches to achieve a defect-free, mirror finish.

What is a machine polisher?

A machine polisher is a specialised piece of car detailing equipment used to remove clear coat defects such as scratches, swirl marks, and bird dropping etchings. There are two main types of machine polisher: dual-action and rotary. Both types of machine polisher can be utilised to deal with different types of paint defects and handle varying levels of clear coat hardness.

What is the difference between a single-stage and two-stage polish?

NVS Valeting offer two machine polishing packages: single-stage and two-stage. Single-stage machine polishing is designed to address light swirl marks, whereas two-stage polishing involves a heavier cutting stage to address deeper clear coat scratches and then a refinement stage to achieve maximum levels of gloss. If you are unsure which service is best for you, we can advise based on the condition of your vehicle.

What are the steps involved in the polishing process?

The paintwork is first washed and decontaminated using tar remover, iron fallout remover, and a clay bar. Following this, the vehicle is thoroughly dried and the trim/ rubber surrounding the paintwork and metal badges are taped over to prevent them from interfering with the polishing process.

The polishing pad is then positioned on the machine polisher’s backing plate and pressed firmly in place. The polishing liquid is applied to the pad and the machine is used to work this over a small-section of the paintwork in an overlapping fashion. The polish residue is then removed and the paintwork inspected with a high-intensity light to assess the condition.

What is the difference between polishing and waxing?

Polishing and waxing are two completely different processes which are often confused. Put simply, polishing is an abrasive process which removes scratches in the clear coat. Polishing offers no protective benefits. Waxing on the other hand, is non-abrasive, so cannot remove scratches but instead provides a layer of protection. In terms of the order, polishing should always be performed before waxing, and never afterwards.

What is the difference between hand polishing and machine polishing?

Machine polishing is far more efficient than hand polishing and achieves a better result in terms of defect removal. However, hand polishing requires less equipment and the risk of damaging the paintwork due to lack of experience is far lower. Professional detailers use machine polishing in order to achieve high-quality results, whereas hand-polishing is more suited to non-professionals.

How much does machine polishing cost?

Our machine polishing packages are very competitively priced, starting from £300.

What equipment do you use for machine polishing?

In order to achieve high quality results, we use the following equipment during the machine polishing process:

  • Dual-action and rotary machine polishers
  • Microfibre, wool and foam polishing pads
  • Polishing and compounding liquids with varying levels of abrasion
  • Ultra-soft microfibre towels
  • High-intensity inspection lights

Can you machine polishing my car at my home or workplace?

Yes, NVS Valeting provides a fully-mobile service. We can perform the machine polishing process at your home or workplace for your convenience. Our team comes fully equipped with all the necessary tools and products to remove scratches and swirl marks from the clear coat.

Do you also offer ceramic coatings?
